acronyms of the reptile world
By Hellan Bach of Herpuniverse.com
There's lots of abbrieviations used in the reptile world, and acronyms for different snakes and lizards ect, i will explain a few of those in this article. some of the popular snake abbrieviations: arb - argentine rainboa boa atb - amazon tree boa bca - boa constrictor amarali bcc - boa constrictor constrictor (red tail boa) bci - boa constrictor imperator (common boa) bp's-ball/royal pythons brb - brazilian rainbow boa ccp - coastal carpet python crb - columbian rainbow boa etb - emerald tree boa grb - guyanan rainbow boa gtp - green tree python ij -Irian Jaya carpet pythons jcp - jungle carpet python prb - peruvian rainbow boa Corn snake abbrieviations: Amel - amelanistic - lacking black pigment Anery - Anerythristic - lacking red pigment Hypo - hypomelanistic - reduced black pigment There's also abbrieviations explaining where the snake or lizard came from: CB = Captive Bred ( born and bred in captivity) CF = Captive Farmed (parents were wild caught and released once eggs/babies were hatched/born) LTC = Long Term Captive (originally wild, but been in captivity for usually more than 6 months) WC = Wild Caught WF = Wild Farmed Numbers that follow this code usually refer to the animals year of birth so cb08 would mean captive bred in 08 and theres also numbers usually in front of a description of a snake or lizard: 1.0.0 would be 1 male 0 females and 0 unsexed 1.1.0 would be one male one female and no unsexed 1.2.5 would be one male two females and five unsexed so a full exapmle might look something like: 1.1 crb cb08 meaning a male and female columbian rainbow boa which have been captive bred in 2008 Most responsible reptile keepers would seek out captive bred specimens where ever this was possible
